Mae’s 30 Day Video Game Challenge 2024: Day Thirteen

Welcome everyone to a brand new challenge for the blog – Mae’s 30 Day Video Game Challenge for 2024! Well, it’s more of a monthly celebration of all things gaming, where I gush about 30 of my top games overall instead of answering daily prompts. They can be some of my forever favorites, games that have recently piqued my interest, or even games incoming that I’m currently hyped about. I may even group some games up in categories here and there, maybe as games from the same series, or various versions of the same game, to hype them up as why I enjoy them so much. We’ll see where the night takes us haha.

Day Thirteen: Monster Prom

If you’ve learned anything from these gaming posts – you should know by name I have a soft spot for story-driven game, especially those with a wide variety of characters as well as choices that can mold how your game is going to go. So let’s chat about one of my favorite dating simulators (lol yes no shame here) – Monster Prom and it’s two sequels Monster Camp and Monster Roadtrip. Well, I’ll probably focus more on Monster Prom and it’s expansion pack moreso than the other two since I haven’t gotten to put in the time on those two games as I have on the original.

So what is Monster Prom you ask? Well – the title hints at the goal. You are one of four monster protagonists who’s goal is to spend your time at Spooky High and making choices and hanging out with possible love interests – all while preparing for prom. There’s quite a few characters you can meet and try to romance through choices – like Scott Howl, a werewolf; Liam de Lioncourt, a vampire; Vera Oberlin, a gorgon; Damien LaVey, a fire demon; Polly Geist, a ghost; Miranda Vanderbilt, a mermaid; Zoe, an Eldritch monster; and Calculester Hewlett-Packard, a computer robot. There’s also hidden character options for possible romances, as well as hidden storylines to explore in the dialogue options you can have with these monsters. No two runs will be the same.

Something fun about this game is that you can make it a solo adventure – with options to make it shorter or longer depending on how long you want to play and how many story options you can chance upon. Or – you can team up with friends to explore the world together, competing for your love with the monsters around you to see who will get their dream date to prom. With every game you play, there’s lots of unlockables to find – from photos that portray the characters and the storylines you play out, and more. There’s a lot packed into this game, as well as the sequels – and the gameplay and storylines expand with the later games – as well as introduce even more characters for you to find and romance.

Who’s my usual go-to for a date? Well I typically aim for Damien, not gonna lie. But all of them are amazing choices and each have their special quirks that make it so there’s something for everyone in these games. I will say though out of the four main characters to choose from as the protagonist – I always pick Vicky Schmidt, a Frankenstein’s monster. She’s so adorable and I love her to death. The others of the main four are awesome too though – including Oz, the personification of fear; Amira Rashid, a fire djinn; and Brian Yu, a zombie. What’s more is that you get to pick your pronouns when you’re deciding your character and the game makes sure those selected pronouns are featured throughout the game. Because we respect folks’ identities in this game!

Here’s the line of trailers for the games, showcasing some of the gameplay and characters. I invite folks to check out the series – heck, I’ll play some rounds with ya if you’d like 🙂 Thanks for reading today and stay tuned for the next post. Lots of love and stay safe out there!
